CAN I INTEREST THE LAKERS IN JOHN BRYANT?

It's been a half season or so since we visited Mr. John Bryant over in Europe. I hear the Lakers could use a big man. And it looks like Mr. Bryant is pretty much still crushing the competition in Europe. And on the plus side, since he's shooting 42.6% from three, he probably fits really well in the D'Antoni system.

12/13 Season G MIN fgm fga 3FGM 3FGA FTM FTA ORB DRB TRB AST PF ST TO BLK PTS

eFG%: 61.7%

TS%: 59.3%

3FG%: 42.6% (!)

FT%: 78%

These stats are from the official stats on the BBL website. Looks like Mr. Bryant is well on his way to a second MVP title, unless the voters are batshit insane. He's scoring 16.5 points a game in 28 minutes on 60% true shooting, while being the best rebounder in the league (indeed, he's so far ahead of 2nd place he could probably log several zero-rebound games and still win the rebounding title). He's also a pretty good shot blocker, and doesn't turn the ball over much given how often he handles it (20 FGA per 48 indicates he is the "go-to" guy on his squad). Great shooter + great rebounder = winz the basketball gamez. He is basically the Kevin Love of the Bundesliga.

Speaking of Love, that's an interesting comparison. Bryant and Love put up very similar numbers in 2007/08, when Love was a freshman and Bryant a junior (Love was a better passer, Bryant a better shot blocker). The next year, Bryant became a truly dominant player, and catapulted to a monstrous 18.3 rebounds per 40, number one in the NCAA. Other players in the top 10 were Faried, Blair, Griffin, Jon Brockman, and Ed Davis. Some of those guys are pretty good at basketball. Oh, and he scored a meager 18 points a game on 64% true shooting! He posted a 21.3 WS/40, which is...well, monstrous (Blake Griffin put up a 21.2).

I realize that Euro stats do not translate to NBA stats, and NCAA stats don't always either. But he isn't playing against high school competition over there. Most professional Euro clubs could thrash most NCAA teams, including most ranked teams. It's laughable that no NBA team seems to think he's worth the veteran's minimum (I have talked to...sources...that tell me Bryant isn't particularly well paid in the BBL, I can't speak for him, obviously, but if that's true, wouldn't he likely leap at an NBA vet-minimum contract?). Raise your hand if you really think giving money to Rasheed Wallace is better than giving a guy like this a shot?

You can help me spread the word with the #FreeJohnBryant twitter hashtag!

Just wanted to say - YES. If Reggie Evans can have a long career, why can't others?!

Have you actually seen him play?

I'm guessing no, otherwise you wouldn't have written three articles about him now.

The standard in Germany is very low. Brose and ALBA are the two German teams that made the Euroleague where they are currently everyone's whipping boys. Ulm got thrashed in the Qualifying round.

Wanna see him in action?!:

Remember those are "highlights"...the sauerkraut and bratwursts sure must be tasty!

I agree that you can pick up good/promising players from Europe for very little money, like Aron Baynes, it will be interesting to see how he does. But not John Bryant.

He put up great college stats, particularly in the most dependable areas. He's put up great European stats, particularly in the most dependable areas. It's probably not unreasonable to liken the German league to a major college conference in terms of quality. That might be underselling it, if anything. He's tall enough with long enough arms. What on earth makes him a bad prospect besides being white and looking chubby? He doesn't look great just standing on a court. I'll grant you that. But his results are superb, and if he hasn't earned a shot in the NBA, it's impossible to earn one based strictly on performance.

Flash,

I'm glad you "guessed" about that, rather than making sure before you constructed your argument. Ok, the "you need to get your nose out of the books and watch games" argument is tiresome at the best of times.

I've seen him play; I've probably watched 6-8 games. In some he's better than others. And, by the way, I used to live in Germany. When I was taking coaching lessons, I was regularly attending the German national U-21 team's practice, where at the time I saw Dirk play a lot. Dirk was the best player on that team, but the gap between him and #2 was not huge.

Were you aware you can find complete games on youtube (though it probably helps to speak German when you are trying to find them)?

I'm not sure I see the problem with his highlights here. You were expecting high flying dunks!? You might want to go back and read one of my first articles, where I explain that the ugly baskets also count for 2 points.

Of course the standard in Germany is low compared to the NBA. But it is not low compared to the NCAA. I'm not suggesting Bryant would be amazing in the NBA. I'm suggesting that he'd be well worth the vet's minimum to give him a shot at being a key role player. Young players tend to get better in their first couple of years in the NBA, with training, increased competition, etc.

By the way: Have you seen Rasheed play lately? How about Jermaine O'Neal? I can just about guarantee that no squad in Germany would waste one of their 2-3 "foreign player" spots on them.

Jermaine O'Neal has looked really good. JO's lost about 30lbs from previous years, and was playing quite well early in the year,

The old WP splits site is down, but http://espn.go.com/nba/player/gamelog/_/id/615/jermaine-oneal shows JO's November and December were solid, January was woeful, and his Feb meh (all comments based on a backup 5).

BTW: is it just me, or does Bryant have a really small neck? Given his 7' 4.75" wingspan, www.draftexpress.com/profile/john-bryant-5317/stats/ if he had a normal neck, he might be 7'2".

So he's white and chubby. People said the same thing about Kevin Love and Marc Gasol. Those guys turned out to be pretty good. Imagine the fun of having him and Kobe on the same team. Now that Scalabrine's retired, John Bryant could be White Mamba 2.0!

Oh Patrick, you really are precious!

If you have seen him play you have no excuse.

The purpose of that youtube vid was to give others a glimpse of him in action. I’m sure there are a handful of people reading this, who have never heard of him or seen him play. After watching that vid I bet they’re thinking this:

“Paddy’s wrote three articles about that fat slow guy?!”
and
“Those are his highlights?!? Those are the best clips they could find?! I’d hate to see him have a bad game.”

This guy does not belong anywhere near an NBA team. Giving him the vet’s minimum would be extreme charity and being a key role player is hilarious. Watching Dirk play in Germany all those years ago is irrelevant and gives no weight to your argument. But hey, I hope you had a nice time there! Did you like the sauerkraut and bratwursts too?!

Lovely argument about Rasheed and O'Neal. They are bad players in the NBA who wouldn't get into the BBL. Bryant is one of the best players in the BBL, therefore Bryant is better than Rasheed and O'Neal!.. Well he sure can rebound!!

Bryant looks like he may be below a Mendoza line of sorts for athleticism/conditioning in the NBA, but still, it's clearly be worth a try.

My John Bryant is Scott Machado. I'm shocked nobody's picked him up after HOU waived him. This is a guy who put up the best assist per game number in 17 years in the NCAA last year, while being very similar to Kyle Lowry physically (great explosiveness, strong frame, but a few inches short). He has some things to work on like consistent shooting, but the talent and starting PG upside is beyond obvious

Patrick,

I think I'm with Flash on this one. Obviously, he doesn't look right for an NBA player--and if he hasn't slimmed down to fighting weight by his age, there's no chance he ever will. Sure, he gets tons of points, rebounds, and blocks--in some league in a FOREIGN COUNTRY, where they don't even eat the same FOODS we do! You can tell with your own eyes that he gets most of those points on ugly shots, and most of those rebounds and blocks occur well below the rim; when you factor in the style deduction on all those vital stats . . . wait . . . you mean there's no actual deduction just because it isn't pretty or uber-athletic? Well, then, forget everything I said. Obviously I'm just a dick.

OK, I'm German and I think I have to correct a few things here:
1. The German basketball league (Beko BBL) isn't a bad league anymore. I admit that I'm not a fan of this league as I'm a big NBA fan for a long time now and if you compare both leagues the BBL obviously doesn't look good BUT it's growing and getting stronger for years now and it's no coincidence that a lot of Ex-NBA players or Ex-College Stars now play here. Anyone remember Wendell Alexis? He was the star of the league most of the 90s (3x MVP) and played for the USA team in 98 during the lockout and was arguably their best player!

2. I've seen John Bryant a few times since Patrick's first article about him, the last time yesterday live where he had another great game where he, at times, played like Shaq in his prime with a soft shooting touch and he was amazing in every game I saw so far. I'm sure he would be a good role player in the NBA in the worst case! As mentioned here quite often it's not about "looking good" in basketball and he just gets the job done with his great instincts and footwork few big man possess.

3. I detected some kind of hate against Germany in some posts?! What's up guys? Is this still connected to our history (you know Hitler and that stuff...) or don't you just know anything about other countries than the USA? I mean what's stuff like "Did you like the sauerkraut and bratwursts too?!" supposed to mean?

Keep up the good work, Patrick! This site is awesome!

Patrick,

I'm curious as to your opinion on two subjects:

1) I've heard many comments all season regarding the Lakers' lack of depth, or bench strength. However, they've had FOUR guys not expected to start who are producing at average or better WP48, while 4 of their 5 projected starters are also better than .100 WP48. A quick glance tells me only 3 other teams can say this--Miami, OKC, and San Antonio. (The Spurs are 5 for 5 on above-average starters.) The biggest difference for LA is clearly injuries; rarely have they played this season without at least 2 of those 9 unavailable or hobbled.

2) As I've followed your site's numbers over the course of the season, I've noticed a number of players whose WP48 seems to get worse while they are sidelined due to injury. Am I imagining this?
