At Sloan one of the most interesting guests was Prasad Setty. Prasad Setty is responsible for making models that do talent evaluation for software engineers at Google. He is a Billy Beane of the software world! And you'd assume that unlike sports clubs that software companies would be more open to data. And that's where you'd be wrong! I know everybody is linking this but of course I'll have to as well. First, we've been writing all year long that L.A. (and/or Kobe) need to wake up and realize that it is no longer 2008, and second, because this song is awesome. Did you ever watch Office Space? You know how in the beginning of the movie, the main character's job sucks so much because he's constantly worried about his job, and he's constantly sucking up to his boss in some futile effort to avoid being dumped on the street? But then, when he learns to stop caring, he suddenly starts impressing people with his attitude.
I ran across something today that made me smile over at Eye On Basketball. Apparently Kobe has great sympathy for the perils and plights of management when trying to navigate the salary cap, field a profitable team, and win championships:
When the Lakers beat the Timberwolves last night, ESPN, NBA.com, and the Twitterverse were all abuzz about how great Kobe was. And don't get me wrong, Kobe was good last night; it's always impressive when a shooting guard snags as many rebounds as the other team's star power forward. But I'm definitely going to have to agree with Stop-n-Pop on this one:
The NBA Season is ready to start on Christmas Day, the last couple of preseason games are being played as I write this up, and it's time for me to cater to every serious NBA fans love of season previews! The 2011 Geektastic Preview is going to be way too large for one article, so I'm dividing it up into divisions (and even so, it's going to be long, so get a cup of coffee!). In this article I'm going to preview the Lakers, who have lost a little of their mojo but are still going to be a very good basketball team capable of winning 45+ games.
